A new study out of Center for Justice & Democracy at New York Law School examines the costs and legal obstacles facing America's service members and veterans.

The VA and DOD run two of the largest healthcare systems in America, treating over 18 million veterans and service members across 2,000+ facilities. But too often, those who risked everything for us come home to dangerous care, hidden negligence, and no recourse.

While medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the civilian world, service members face even greater risk, without legal protections. The Feres Doctrine blocks families from holding those accountable for deadly military hospital errors, and VA hospitals are faced with chronic understaffing.

Even now, over 94% of VA facilities report severe doctor shortages. The stories are real: families begging for answers, patients suffering life-altering harm, and veterans dying preventable deaths. If you are a veteran, service member, or have a loved one who has experienced this, we'd love to hear from you. You are not alone.

Enough is enough. It’s time for transparency, justice, and safety over profit, no matter who you are or where you served.
